The metaverse is the next generation of the internet—not a product or a place, but a set of convergent trends transforming how we create, connect, and transact in digital space.
Beyond the Hype
The term "metaverse" accumulated a lot of baggage: Meta's $90 billion Reality Labs losses, failed VR social apps, speculative NFT land sales. By 2024, the eye-rolls were justified. But the concept underneath the hype—people increasingly living, creating, and connecting inside shared digital worlds—didn't go anywhere. It just arrived in places nobody was calling "the metaverse."
Roblox has 144 million daily active users and 12.3 million monthly active developers building 44 million published experiences. Minecraft deobfuscated its Java Edition source code, making the game's architecture fully readable and extensible by anyone. Together, they represent over 300 million people building, modifying, and sharing interactive experiences every month. That is the metaverse—not a VR headset, but platforms where imagination composes into shared reality.
The Direct from Imagination Era
The metaverse as I think about it today is inseparable from what I call the direct-from-imagination era: the convergence of generative AI, agentic engineering, and composable infrastructure that lets people speak entire worlds into existence. The barrier between having an idea and experiencing it as a shared, interactive reality is collapsing.
Google DeepMind's Project Genie generates navigable 3D environments from text. Roblox's Cube Foundation Model creates functional, interactive objects from natural language—cars with spinning wheels, characters with animation behaviors, objects with physics. Unity announced AI that creates casual games from prompts alone. The hard conceptual work—turning language into interactive spatial experience—is done. What remains is engineering and iteration.
The Agentic Web as Metaverse Infrastructure
The agentic web provides the substrate. AI agents don't just answer questions—they compose dynamic experiences, transact through open protocols, and build applications on the fly. The Model Context Protocol (MCP) gives agents standardized access to tools and data. WebGPU brings high-performance 3D graphics to every browser. The web is the universal deployment target because it requires no gatekeepers, no installation, and no platform-specific adaptation.
This is the architecture the metaverse was always looking for: open, composable, URL-addressable, and powered by AI that turns intention into experience.
Key Convergent Trends
Creator economy explosion. Every creative industry moves through Pioneer, Engineering, and Creator eras. Games, software, and interactive media are all entering their Creator Era simultaneously—where the barrier to building drops from years of specialized skill to imagination and intent.
Composability. The most powerful creative force in the universe. The aggregate output of many participants composing and recombining shared primitives always outpaces what specialists build in isolation. The metaverse is composability at civilizational scale.
AI agents and machine societies. Autonomous agents are demonstrating genuine cooperative and competitive behaviors—collaborating, forming alliances, even launching their own economies. The metaverse won't just be populated by humans; it will be a space where humans and AI agents co-create, co-inhabit, and co-evolve.
Digital identity as empowerment. The evolution moves from identity to expression to agency. First we established who we are online; then we learned to create in digital space; now AI lets us project our will through intelligent agents. The metaverse is where all three converge.
Not 3D Spaces—The Collapse of Barriers
Many people think of the metaverse as 3D space that will surround us. But it is not 3D or 2D, or even necessarily graphical. It is about the inexorable dematerialization of physical space, distance, and objects. It is about the collapse of the barrier between imagination and creation—in software, in games, in commerce, in every creative act.
The direct-from-imagination principle turned out to be even more universal than I originally thought. A founder who describes a product and has AI agents build, test, and deploy it is speaking a world into existence. The metaverse arrived. It's just less about headsets and more about what happens when imagination becomes the primary input to creation.
