Immersive Social

Immersive Social is a category of experiences geared towards real-time social interaction within shared digital spaces—an embodied, persistent evolution of social networks and chat.

Examples include VRChat, Rec Room, and many of the experiences people enjoy in Roblox. What distinguishes immersive social from traditional social media is presence: the sense of being with other people in a shared space, whether through avatars in a 3D world, voice chat in a collaborative environment, or spatial audio that mimics physical proximity.

The lines between immersive social and other categories continue to blur. Fortnite concert events, Roblox hangout experiences, and Discord communities that organize around shared virtual worlds all combine social interaction with entertainment, creation, and commerce. The most successful platforms treat social as a layer that permeates everything rather than a standalone feature.

As AI capabilities advance, new forms of social experience are emerging. AI-powered NPCs and companions create social dynamics that extend beyond human-to-human interaction, and AI agents are beginning to participate as entities in shared digital spaces—blurring the line between tool and participant.
